In real-world automotive and outdoor conditions, an automotive head up displays quality isnโ€™t just about luminance, contrast ratio, resolution, or color gamut. Our research shows that subjective visual perception “how people feel and experience a display” can outweigh traditional specs when judging brightness and contrast in a vehicle display.

We tested six of our displays: Edge-lit LCD, Mini-LED with Full Array Local Dimming, and OLED, ranging from 7โ€ณ to 21.6โ€ณ, without revealing technologies or specifications to participants. In both automotive center console and outdoor-simulated lighting, participants rated brightness, color quality, sharpness, contrast, and content suitability.

Whether in the sky (FAA-approved aviation displays), an automotive’s heads up display, or the lab (DICOM-calibrated medical displays), end-user experience plays a critical role when designing products for real-world use.
